Ukraine, WHO: "Few vaccinated in the country, risk of infection outside the border"

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has expressed strong concern about the reports of attacks on healthcare facilities and healthcare workers in Ukraine: “We have received several unconfirmed reports of attacks on hospitals and healthcare infrastructure, as well as a confirmed report of an incident last week, in which a hospital was bombed: people were killed four people out of ten were injured, including six health workers.”

Another source of concern is represented by the low percentage of vaccinated people in Ukraine: "mass movements of the population are likely to further contribute to the transmission of COVID-19, potentially increasing the pressure on health systems in neighboring countries", explains the general of the WHO. The risk is equally high for those who remain in the country: “the low percentage of swabs carried out indicates that there is likely to be a significant number of untraced positive cases. Added to this is poor vaccination coverage and critical oxygen shortages.

Meanwhile, the WHO is working to ensure the supply of essential medical equipment.

The network of Italian pharmacies, through Federfarma, has also promptly responded to the solidarity initiatives of the PGEU by activating a fundraiser to donate medicines and medical devices according to the needs indicated by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health. The first load of medicines left from Naples with over 65 thousand euros in humanitarian aid.

La raccolta è promossa nell’ambito del progetto “Un farmaco per tutti”, supportato da Federfarma Napoli. Sono stati inviati latte in polvere, acqua ossigenata, soluzione fisiologica, bombole di ossigeno, omogeneizzati, farmaci antinfiammatori, antibiotici, antidolorifici e sacche per stomie. Anche Federfarma Messina si prepara ad inviare farmaci in Ucraina. Lo stesso accade in Puglia, in Emilia-Romagna, in Piemonte. Le farmacie di tutta Italia si stanno mobilitando per dare un aiuto concreto  al popolo ucraino.

Per questo la nostra industria si è mobilitata a livello europeo e si è impegnata a svolgere il proprio ruolo e a fornire l’accesso ai medicinali essenziali e di emergenza.

Stiamo valutando l’impatto di ogni possibile interruzione della catena di fornitura dovuta alla situazione attuale, nel rispetto di tutte le regole o sanzioni attuate dalle autorità competenti.

Per offrire un ulteriore supporto concreto alle popolazioni in Ucraina e quelle rifugiate nei vicini Stati membri dell’UE, EGUALIA unitamente a Medicines for Europe e alle associazioni nazionali gemelle in tutta Europa ha lanciato una raccolta fondi destinata ad una delle principali fondazioni umanitarie attive in Ucraina, anche grazie al costante contatto con le imprese della nostra industria che operano nel Paese.

 “Esprimo, insieme alle imprese del farmaco in Italia, forte preoccupazione per l’intensificarsi del conflitto armato in Ucraina. Con Efpia (Federazione europea delle industrie e associazioni farmaceutiche) confermiamo la volontà di garantire che i pazienti delle nazioni coinvolte nella crisi continuino ad avere accesso ai farmaci di cui hanno bisogno.

Our country exported on average in 2020-2021 over 310 million euros a year of pharmaceutical products to Russia and Ukraine, which are also important for exports throughout the supply chain.

Condividiamo e sosteniamo quindi l’appello di Efpia alle parti coinvolte di escludere dall’ambito delle sanzioni l’intera filiera del farmaco, dai medicinali ai principi attivi farmaceutici, da qualsiasi altro bene intermedio per la produzione di diagnostici, trattamenti e vaccini, ai macchinari e al packaging.
