ISTAT. Industrial production growing, pharmaceutical products slightly down

All sectors are growing cyclically, with the exception of the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations, which is down slightly.

 

In June 2020, the seasonally adjusted industrial production index is estimated to increase by 8.2% compared to May. On average for the second quarter, the level of production fell by 17.5% compared to the previous three months.

The seasonally adjusted monthly index shows widespread cyclical increases in all sectors: consumer goods (+9.8%), intermediate goods (+9.0%), capital goods (+8.1%) and, with a less accentuated trend, energy (+2.1%) grew markedly.

Corrected for calendar effects, in June 2020 the overall index decreased in trend terms by 13.7% (working days were 21 against 20 in June 2019). Strong trend downturns characterize all sectors; the decline is less pronounced only for energy (-6.2%), while it is more significant for capital goods (-16.2%), intermediate goods (-15.7%) and consumer goods (-11.4%).

The only sector of economic activity that records a tendential increase is that of mining activities (+1.5%). Among the remaining sectors, the greatest declines were recorded in the textile, clothing, leather and accessories industries (-26.7%), in the manufacture of means of transport (-26.4%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-22.9%).
