In February 2020, the seasonally adjusted industrial production index is estimated to decrease by 1.2% compared to January. On average for the December-February quarter, the seasonally adjusted level of production decreased by 0.8% compared to the previous three months.
The seasonally adjusted monthly index grows on a cyclical basis only for energy (+2.7%); Conversely, intermediate goods (-1.1%) and consumer goods (-0.9%) decreased, while capital goods remained stable.
Adjusted for calendar effects, in February 2020 the overall index decreased in trend terms by 2.4% (there were 20 working days, as in February 2019).
On a trend basis and net of calendar effects, limited growth was recorded in February 2020 only for capital goods (+1.4%). Consumer goods (-3.0%) and intermediate goods (-2.3%) decreased markedly; the energy decreases in a more limited way (-0.6%).
The sectors of economic activity that recorded the greatest trend increases are the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+8.3%), the wood, paper and printing industry (+6.0%) and other industries (+5 ,7%). The largest decreases were instead recorded in the textile, clothing and leather industries (-12.1%), in the supply of electricity, gas, steam and water (-6.2%) and in the manufacture of means of transport (-3.7% ).
