THE MAN who has led the pharmaceutical company of the Tuscany Region in recent years, leading among other things to make huge savings, will be in service at the Health Department in Piedmont from 1 September. Loredano Giorni leaves and with him the revolution of the via Taddeo Alderotti department ends. The new councilor Stefania Saccardi has changed most of the key executives, applying a sort of "spoil system" with respect to Rossi's management. New names also mean greater autonomy of action in an area that the president knows very well.
And after the change at the top of the department, where Valtere Giovannini, very close to Rossi, gave way to Monica Piovi, now the other names are also known. Lorenzo Roti, former health director of the Local Health Authority of Lucca, who had been in the Region with the commissioner Scaramuccia, will take care of the territory. Another return is also expected, that of Maria Teresa Mechi, who would be destined to leave the Careggi health management, where she did not enjoy great autonomy, to return to the department and take care of the hospital. Councilor Saccardi aims to increase the skills of the various managers, to decrease their number. In place of Giorni, Tiberio Corona will arrive from Pisa.
The department will also participate in the reduction in spending that the various companies are also obliged to in order to close the year in balance. The idea is to pay greater attention to financing the various projects of individual professionals who until now have presented themselves to the department to ask for money, and also to work on funds destined for universities. Between now and the end of the year, all these items will commit around 100 million and Saccardi hopes to save one 10-20%.

Among all the changes in recent weeks, the most sensational is in some ways that of Giorni. Over the years, the manager has waged a battle to cut spending, promoting the use of generics for the first time in Italy, verifying doctors' prescriptions, focusing on cheaper medicines for certain pathologies, working on similar bios, and promoting direct distribution from part of the Asl. All ideas then copied from the other Regions. Giorni has always had complex relationships with the industry, it was he who denounced with Rossi the maneuver of a few years ago with which Pfizer wanted to denigrate Tuscany. He denounced the system of "extra discounts", was heard for the investigation into the pharmaceutical company Menarini. For years he was in Aifa, representing the Regions, and followed the case of drugs against hepatitis C, unleashing the ire of the agency itself and of the industry when Tuscany decided to tender on its own. And just last month, when the appointments of the Regions in Aifa were to be renewed, Tuscany decided to no longer focus on Giorni. Which led to a break in relations. In particular, President Rossi seems to be behind the decision not to leave Giorni in Rome. The battle for the drug against hepatitis C continues without the protagonist of these years, a name certainly not appreciated by the drug industry. The coach, who in the past had also collaborated with Sicily and Lazio, decided to find a position in another region, and took part in a competition organized by the Piedmont councillorship.
