The Memorandum of Understanding for the construction in Tuscany, in the Livorno interport area, of a digital logistics platform to support the pharmaceutical industries was signed yesterday at the Ministry of Economic Development.
The Minister signed the agreement Charles Calenda, the President of the Tuscany Region Enrico Rossi, the Councilor of the Municipality of Collesalvetti Richard Demi, the President of the Port System Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Stephen Corsini, the managing director of the interport of Livorno Bino Fulceri and the managing director of Toscana airports spa Gina Giani. The signatory pharmaceutical companies are the Eli Lilly with the General Manager for Italy Ilya Yuffa, Molteni farmaceutici with the Chief Executive Officer Giuseppe Seghi Recli, GSK vaccines srl with the CEO Rino Rappuoli and Kedrion spa with the managing director Marialina Marcucci.
This is, explains the note from the Mise, an investment of around 60-80 million euros which could help create up to 200 new jobs to create a new pharmaceutical hub in Tuscany which will focus heavily on digitization and technological support, such as automated and robotic warehouses.
“We are very pleased with the signing. This is an important initiative to which the many national and multinational drug companies that have been present in the Region for decades have joined with conviction", announced the president of Farmindustria, Massimo Scaccabarozzi. “Companies that contribute to the growth and economy of the territory and of the country as a whole, with specializations and poles of excellence in biotech, vaccines and blood products.
With 7,000 direct employees, 850 of whom are researchers, and 4,000 in related industries, it is the third pharmaceutical region in Italy in terms of employees and the fourth in R&D investments (250 million). Without forgetting the 15 production plants and 9 companies with research centers that have brought 4 provinces – Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa – among the top 20 in terms of pharmaceuticals in Italy. It is an agreement which, with ever closer and synergistic collaboration between public and private players, can truly strengthen the Tuscan hub and make it even more competitive in the country and in Europe” concluded Scaccabarozzi.
