Swiss. Drugs, sales increase

The share of generics on the market for medicines reimbursed by health insurance companies was 14.4%. Patent-protected drugs accounted for 52.3% of those reimbursed by basic insurance. After years of stagnation, the medicines market in Switzerland returned to growth in 2015.

BERN – After years of stagnation, the medicines market in Switzerland returned to growth in 2015: compared to the previous year, sales increased by 5%. On the other hand, turnover fell by 2.8% due to the lowering of prices carried out in previous years, today indicate the Association of Pharmaceutical Companies in Switzerland (Vips) and Interpharma, which brings together companies in the sector that practice research.

The drop in turnover could be mitigated by the introduction of new medicines and increased sales of more expensive packs.

The market for medicines reimbursed by health insurance companies grew by 6.3% to 4.43 billion francs. Pharmacies accounted for 50.9% of this market, doctor's offices 26% and hospitals 23.1%. The former – the note specifies – recorded the strongest growth (+7.2%).

Antiviral medicines recorded the sharpest growth in value (+47.5%), following the introduction of new hepatitis C drugs. The generics market continued to progress (+3.2%) to stand at 636 .7 million francs. The share of generics on the market for medicines reimbursed by health insurance companies was 14.4%.

Patent-protected drugs accounted for 52.3% of those reimbursed by basic insurance. In terms of value, they recorded a growth of 9.5%, while in volume they were less distributed.
