«Life flows quickly, therefore you need enthusiasm»

A 33-year-old Argentinian has arrived in the city who, under the motto of nothing is impossible, you just want to, sells photos of his travels around the world. Hosted by Giuseppe, who met him by chance, «I help him with the household chores and to arrange things in the house». And he's already thinking about how to continue his tour of Sicily

Matya Amaya is a 33-year-old Argentinian and has a motto: Nothing is impossible, you just need to want it. Questa consapevolezza l’ha maturata in cinque anni, da quando he travels the world with his bike and now he has landed in Palermo, city where he will stay for a few more days before leaving again. In his previous life, as Maty defines it when he lived with his family in Argentina, he was a scientific informant, was earning about three thousand euros in a week, then the economic crisis hits and he loses his job and with it his fiancée.

Disappointed, Maty sinks into a state of existential crisis and decides that to take his life back in hand requires a journey. So he decides to leave for 15 days by bike. Since then, however, he has never stopped. His bicycle now weighs 90 kg and has a name: Freedom. Ha girato tutta l’America Latina: Perù, Cile, Bolivia, Brasile, Messico. Poi è partito alla volta del vecchio continente, è arrivato in Spagna e da lì ha girato tutta la penisola iberica, salendo in Francia e arrivando in Italia fino a Palermo. In questi lunghi anni in giro ha imparato tanto: ad esempio che per vivere non bisogna chiedere e basta ma che la vita è uno scambio; con la sua macchina fotografica ha immortalato spectacular places, sunrises, sunsets, the salt desert in Bolivia and the Amazon forest where he lived for two months in some indigenous tribes and also saw White shadow, la tigre bianca chiamata così dagli Indios perché è l’ultima cosa che si vede prima di morire. Maty però grazie ad una serie di fortunati episodi si è salvato ed è andato avanti, oltre, senza acqua nel deserto e senza cibo in altri luoghi.

Un giorno mi chiesero di prendere dei frutti da un albero e io li raccolsi tutti, quando li portai al capovillaggio lui mi rimproverò perché ne avrei dovuti prendere uno solo per ciascuno e non tutti perché gli altri sarebbero serviti a sfamare gli uccelli o le scimmie o gli altri animali della foresta, perché, mi spiegò che they don't live to subjugate nature or animals, non prendono tutto per loro ma convivono con gli animali e le piante e pensiamo anche a loro. Loro odiano l’uomo bianco perché generalmente quando arriva in Amazzonia lo fa o per le pelli degli animali o per fare del male alla natura».

He lives by telling his story and selling his photos that he prints and in exchange for a few euros he gives to anyone who wants to support his journey and his adventure. He has a facebook page Maty Amaya for the world, e così capita che lo raggiungono persone per fare un tratto di viaggio insieme a lui. Adesso aspetta una ragazza spagnola per continuare il suo giro in Sicilia. Poi partirà per il resto d’Europa e si è posto the goal is to arrive for the World Cup in Russia. Ha scritto un libro sui suoi tre mesi dentro la foresta amazzonica, l’esperienza che più lo ha segnato.

A Palermo è stato ospitato da un ragazzo che ha incontrato per caso, Giuseppe. «Anche qui ho cercato uno scambio – aggiunge Maty – he hosts me, I was able to take a shower and a washing machine at his house, but I have two arms, I can help him with the household chores and to arrange things in the house».
