Professor Tirelli, yesterday the news of the indictment of 142 people involved in the investigation into Glaxo was given.
“It is a pity it has not been reported that of the 4,700 doctors investigated 4 years ago, 4,500 cases have been archived by as many as 34 out of 35 Italian prosecutors (practically all cases that have been evaluated by a judge) and recently the first Glaxo trial conducted in Pavia a few days ago, led to the acquittal of the 27 defendants with full formula because the facts do not exist. The 25 doctors from Pavia and the 2 employees of the pharmaceutical multinational of Verona therefore emerge head-on from the judge of the Court of Pavia Piero Balduzzi. All this clearly demonstrates that things are very different from how they were presented”.
However, the widespread impression remains that the flow of money between companies and doctors is a constant.
“But this is false and even offensive. The widespread impression is not the demonstration that things have happened, at least in a civilized country, and in any case the widespread impression is too often based on investigations of this kind where what is hypothesized does not result, as can be seen from the 35 prosecutors who filed the cases. I am proud of what has been done with Glaxo's contributions, for example the participation in the seventh world AIDS conference in Barcelona (about 20,000 participants including doctors, patients, politicians, Clinton was also there, in the vast majority of cases supported by regular funding from the pharmaceutical industry), regularly approved by the Ministry of Health, together with the entire AIDS commission of the time of which I was a member, and I went to the congress with 3 oral presentations; incidentally it is thanks to the presence at that event that I had a ride, as they say in jargon. on TG1 to talk about the use of condoms as a strategy to fight AIDS (which I don't think are Glaxo products). There was also a donation of 10,000 euros to Anlaids Friuli-Venezia Giulia, an ONLUS, which I have been honored to preside over for years. Funds that have been well spent and documented: for example in favor of AIDS patients, a part-time doctor and a part-time secretary. All things documented by the auditor of the Association and available to anyone who requests them, and obviously never requested by anyone. I am disgusted with how the story is presented: is there any doctor in Italy and in the civilized world who has not gone to a medical conference with the sponsorship of a pharmaceutical company? For years, among other things, participations and sponsorships have been regulated and require the prior approval of the Ministry of Health, as in my case and in those of the other colleagues under investigation".
Contributions are undoubtedly well spent, but public opinion thinks about the possible counterparts, don't you think?
“AIDS is a disease that has gone from deadly in all cases to chronic in many cases thanks to the drugs that s
