The levels of public pharmaceutical expenditure per capita in Italy are lower than that of the main European countries because the prices of prescription drugs are among the lowest in Europe: during 2006 the gap widened on average from 20 to 30% (with peaks up to 40%) as a result of the measures. The cuts established by the 2007 Finance Act on all health care accounted for 50% on pharmaceuticals alone, which represents 16% of expenditure. From Il Giornale della Previdenza - Year IX n.8
