Romano Marabelli explains that he wants to "relieve the minister and the ministry of any embarrassment resulting from the media attacks". Lorenzin expresses "appreciation for the institutional sensitivity shown"
SABRINA VALLETTA⎪WEDNESDAY 16 JULY 2014 Health Desk
The secretary general of the Ministry of Health, Romano Marabelli, today presented a request for suspension from duties and salary following the press reports on the investigation by the Rome prosecutor's office into the affair of the Avian and Blu Tongue vaccines. This was announced by the Ministry of Health.
In the letter, sent to the Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, Marabelli motivated the request with the need "to relieve the minister and the ministry of any embarrassment resulting from the media attacks". Mirabelli's reference is probably to an investigation in which L'Espresso in recent weeks revealed some details of the ongoing investigations (read “The secret business of selling viruses …” on l'Espresso).
According to the Rome prosecutor's office on the Blue Language and Avian vaccine emergencies there were offenses and omissions, which caused damage to the zootechnical heritage. The Rome prosecutor's office recently closed the investigation with 41 suspects who now risk ending up on trial with charges which, depending on the positions, range from criminal association to corruption, from an epidemic to the spread of an animal disease, from ideological falsehood to the disclosure of official secrets.
In the list of the notice of closure of the investigation, executives and officials of the Ministry of Health stand out, including Marabelli, in fact. Among others, Vincenzo Caporale, at the time the director of the experimental zooprophylactic institute of Abruzzo and Molise, the virologist and deputy of Civic Choice Ilaria Capua and managers of the pharmaceutical company Merial Italia.
Minister Lorenzin proceeded with the suspension of the secretary general, expressing "appreciation for the institutional sensitivity shown and certain that Marabelli can demonstrate his extraneousness to the facts".
