PARIS, APRIL 18 – After the fire that devastated the Catholic Cathedral, symbol of Paris, Notre-Dame on Monday evening, today the first statements by the Father Rector Mario Fabbroni: "No Notre-Dame for the next 5/6 years".
A painful but necessary decision to make the structure and the works inside it completely safe, time and capital are needed to invest. The Gothic cathedral will suffer a stop to visitors. Being state-owned, like most French religious buildings, a huge international collection has already been launched for reconstruction purposes, one million euros has been collected, another 20 million have been donated to Macron by the Brazilian billionaire Lily Safra, 10 million from the Sanofi pharmaceutical company which also has sites in Italy, 5 million dollars made available by Disney. The American President Trump, after an interview with Pope Francis, with a tweet in these hours, offered the help of the best US experts for reconstruction.
According to the unions, however, the mega donations of "French McDucks like Francois Pinault (Kering) and Bernard Arnault (Lvmh) or large groups like Total" show that the money is there: "If they are able to donate tens of millions for rebuild Notre-Dame, stop telling us that there is not enough money to respond to the social emergency" or for their employees, is the comment by Philippe Martinez, secretary general of the CGT, the main French trade union.
Evidently, he added, "money does not rain" equally for all causes. An observation also made by the Fondation Abbè Pierre, which has been dealing with the marginalized for decades, who wrote sarcastically on Twitter: “400 million for Notre-Dame, thanks Kering, Total and Lvmh for your generosity. We are very attached to the place of the funeral of the Abbè Pierre (the funeral of the founder was held in 2007 precisely in Notre-Dame, ed). But we are also very attached to his battles. If you could give 1% to those in need, we would be satisfied."
Finally, there is no shortage of criticism from the parties, although after the fire they had decided to suspend the electoral campaign for the European elections. From the socialists who hope for "an equivalent mobilization for the millions of women, men, children, families who are also a human cathedral to be protected", to the radical left of France Insoumise who accuses the great patrons of wanting to carry out an enormous operation of zero-tax marketing.
