The ECM restarts

Six-month extension for the experimental phase of continuing education (CME) of doctors and all other operators of the NHS, expiring on December 31 of this year. This was decided by the Minister of Health, Livia Turco, and the regional health councilors, during yesterday's meeting at the ministry. A Government-Regions joint committee will soon be set up with the task of verifying and fine-tuning the new methods for the CME, with the consultation of the professions concerned.

The extension will allow the already accredited courses and training events to take place, pending the writing of the new rules. Compulsory continuous training, which began in January 2002, "is an opportunity - the minister and the Regions agree - which still needs to be made available to healthcare workers". The continuous training program provides for the obligation for NHS operators to achieve a certain number of credits during the year, which are obtained by participating in congresses, conventions and CME accredited courses. Until the end of 2005 they were accredited 218,933 events, to which they add 66,537 corporate training projects. They got involved 84 providers And 69 in 'distance' training, using new technologies.

In 2005, the ranking of the professions that have undergone the most training and updating, sees i doctors (82,795), followed by nurses (19,300), pharmacists (17,485), psychologists (10,785). From Doctornews 11-21-06
