The Rsu Menarini to counter the thousand redundancies announced by the owners (and only for 30 days frozen) starts the mobilization and organizes a first package of strike hours in defense of work, employment and rights. While waiting for Menarini to "withdraw from the heinous blackmail and the anti-social plan proposed and for the Ministry of Economic Development to convene the national table – warn the provincial councilors of the Communist Refoundation Andrea Calò and Lorenzo Verdi – has also called a meeting for Tuesday 30 October 2012, on the occasion of Minister Fornero's visit to the city". Communist Refoundation in reaffirming "full solidarity with the workers and support for the dispute" asks the Province of Florence to report on the work carried out by the table of the Tuscany Region, with the Provinces of Florence and Pisa and the Municipality of Bagno a Ripoli towards the property and of the Government "to counter the layoffs and on all the other commitments undertaken to defend and protect Menarini workers". "On Friday evening 26 October 2012, the initiative promoted by Menarini's RSU "Together...for work" was held at the Hotel Mediterraneo in Florence following the declarations made by the company to proceed with 1,000 redundancies.
The thousand redundancies were announced by the General Management during the verification meeting on industrial prospects and were instrumentally linked to the repercussions of the provisions on the review of health expenditure (so-called spending review).
At the time no one imagined this dramatic and worrying epilogue for the workers of the pharmaceutical company, but the shameful blackmail implemented by the owners against the social partners involved, in particular the Government, to induce them to backtrack on the law which favors purchase of generic drugs.
We recall that the union statement that followed was clear:
“…The OO.SS. in the face of these declarations, they strongly rejected the company proposal, considering it instrumental and rash, moreover in the absence of an industrial development project, asking for its immediate withdrawal and the opening of a union table….”. The size of the redundancies announced is the highest in the pharmaceutical sector and in the panorama of the Italian industry. The trade unions starting tomorrow they will take steps to request a meeting with the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) so that the company management can represent its industrial policy proposal in the highest institutional headquarters, representing Menarini, the first Italian multinational in the sector.”
Following the strong mobilization and social and political protests, the pharmaceutical company on 22 October decided to accept the request arrived from the Tuscany Region, but also from the national trade union organizations and from the various institutions (Province and Municipality of Pisa and Florence , Municipality of Bagno a Ripoli), to suspend the opening of the dismissal procedures for 30 days. Even if the suspension was considered important, the judgment given by the RSU Menarini was lapidary and acceptable "... We expected the withdrawal of the dispute, not a fixed-term suspension".
