In September 2016, the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production decreased by 0.8% compared to August, however maintaining a level higher than that recorded in July. This decrease, which occurs after two months of significant increases, does not prevent the recording of a strong increase in production levels on average for the July-September 2016 quarter (+1.2% compared to the previous quarter).
The trend towards production expansion is also confirmed on an annual basis: corrected for calendar effects, in September 2016 the index increased in trend terms by 1.8% (there were 22 working days as in September 2015). On average for the first nine months of the year, production grew by 1.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The seasonally adjusted monthly index shows positive cyclical variations in the groupings of energy (+3.3%) and consumer goods (+1.2%); on the other hand capital goods (-5.8%) and intermediate goods (-2.8%) decreased.
In trend terms, the indexes corrected for calendar effects recorded positive changes in all sectors: in fact, increases in consumer goods (+3.0%), energy (+2.4%), capital goods (+1.6% ) and intermediate goods (+1.2%).
As regards the sectors of economic activity, in September 2016 the sectors that recorded the greatest trend growth were those of the textile, clothing, leather and accessories industries (+10.2%), mining (+6.8%) and production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+5.6%). The largest decreases were recorded in the sectors of the manufacture of electrical appliances and non-electrical household appliances (-6.2%), the wood, paper and printing industries (-2.8%) and the manufacture of rubber and plastics, other non-metallic mineral products (-1.9%)
