Stccording to what the New York Times this morning the pharmaceutical company Pfizer would have decided to stop selling the drugs if they are used for lethal injections in American prisons where this practice is foreseen as a capital punishment for convicts.
In reality there are already 20 European and American pharmaceutical companies that have already announced similar initiatives but Pfizer's decision is considered a true milestone: the global pharmaceutical giant in fact has the size and influence on the market capable of dictating the way for the sector. The pharmaceutical company has in fact imposed strict controls on its products to ensure that they are not used for lethal injections for capital punishment.
According to the Reprieve association, which fights the use of capital punishment in justice, from now on, states that intend to continue the execution of capital sentences will thus only be able to resort to the black market to procure substances:
With this move, all manufacturers authorized by the federal authorities of the FDA have now blocked the sale of any potential execution drug, commented Maya Foa of Reprieve.
