Monza – Luigi Rovati, President of Rottapharm Madaus, one of the most important Italian pharmaceutical companies based in Monza, has been nominated Cavaliere del Lavoro by the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. Professor Rovati, researcher and entrepreneur in the pharmaceutical sector, has discovered and patented drugs in the fields of rheumatology, gastroenterology, connective tissue metabolism and other metabolic diseases, central nervous system and broncho-respiratory system and in oncology. He has also developed new drug delivery systems in gynecology and cardiology. He has filed over 60 patents in Italy, extended to many countries around the world. He is the author of over 300 publications in international scientific journals.
In 1961 Rovati founded the pharmaceutical company Rotta Research Laboratorium Spa, named Rottapharm SpA in 2004 of which he is President. In December 1999, it acquired Laboratori Guieu from the American group Bristol Myers Squibb and entered the Dermocosmetics sector with two leading brands in Italy, Saugella and Babygella, which were later successfully introduced in other European markets as well. In 2005 it acquired the Biochimici PSN of Bologna, thanks to which Rottapharm conquered the leadership of the Italian market of dermocosmetics in pharmacies. In August 2007, it concluded the acquisition of the German company Madaus Pharma, the most important M&A operation by an Italian pharmaceutical company worldwide and placed Rottapharm among the main European pharmaceutical groups.
