Merck (US5893311077) has announced that it will pay $950 million to settle the lawsuits brought against it for having sold the anti-arthritis drug Vioxx without having the necessary authorization. The US group had had to withdraw the product from the market in September 2004 because studies had indicated serious collateral risks for the cardiovascular system. The story caused a scandal because Merck had already known much earlier about the risks of Vioxx. In 2007, the pharmaceutical industry giant had already agreed to pay $4.85 billion for the resolution of most of the lawsuits related to Vioxx
