"An Italian drug agency more similar to the American FDA, which has faster times and is the guarantor of a national, not regional drug policy". This is the project of the Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin for a reform of the regulatory body for medicines, mentioned during the visit to the Abbvie plant in Campoverde di Aprilia.
The minister underlined the need for policies capable of making Italy and Europe attractive for companies investing in innovation in order to keep the Old Continent competitive "compared to the USA and emerging countries", he explained. And for the minister, the attractiveness also concerns the regulatory systems "which must be less cumbersome, faster and guarantee the certainty of the rules which can be harsh but must be certain, to entice multinationals and others, to maintain investments in the territory national and European".
In this context, greater speed is needed. “I had a decree approved that allows the reduction of registration times to 100 days. But the question of the Regions that lengthen the times still remains. And Aifa doesn't always make it because it hasn't been structured to work in such a short time". For example, committee meetings are not close together and it would be necessary for the members to be totally dedicated to the task. "I would like an Aifa like the FDA", he reiterated in conclusion.
