In March 2019, the seasonally adjusted industrial production index is estimated to decrease by 0.9% compared to February. In the average of the first quarter of the current year, the seasonally adjusted level of production increases by 1.0% compared to the previous quarter.
The seasonally adjusted monthly index shows a modest cyclical increase only for capital goods (+0.1%); decreases are recorded instead for consumer goods (-2.3%) and, to a lesser extent, for energy (-0.4%) and intermediate goods (-0.3%).
Corrected for calendar effects, in March 2019 the overall index decreased in trend terms by 1.4% (there were 21 working days, against 22 in March 2018).
In March 2019, the indices corrected for calendar effects recorded a trend increase exclusively for capital goods (+1.2%); on the contrary, a marked decrease characterized energy (-5.9%), while intermediate goods (-1.9%) and consumer goods (-1.0%) decreased to a lesser extent.
The sectors of economic activity that recorded the most significant positive trend changes are mining (+5.7%), the manufacture of electrical equipment and non-electrical household equipment (+3.3%) and the food, beverage and tobacco industries (+2.7%). The largest decreases were recorded in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-9.0%), in the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (-6.7%) and in the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air (-5.2%).
