"Research is looking for you. How to become a researcher and why'. This is the title of a booklet delivered to teachers of scientific areas of high schools in Campania, in a meeting held yesterday at the Novartis plant in Torre Annunziata (Naples). The The aim of the handbook is to direct young people towards disciplines that find outlets in drug companies. The initiative is part of the school project 'Farmaci & Vita - Meeting with drug research', created by Farmindustria and the Ministry of Education, universities and research, to promote scientific culture in schools. The project, launched in the 2006/2007 school year, has so far involved high school teachers and students from Basilicata, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Lombardy and Veneto. A recent survey by the Istituto Piepoli on 'young people and research' has shown how scientific research is perceived by students as an ideally exciting but concretely unrewarding activity, both in terms of working conditions and the 'social' recognition of the figure of the researcher. It is therefore important to raise awareness of the fascination of research activity and the satisfaction of the goals achieved, without hiding the complexity and commitment behind it. "It is a very significant project for us - says Sergio Dompe', president of Farmindustria - which aims to bring the world of school closer to that of work. It is therefore up to teachers to convey to young people the value of research to contribute to the economic and scientific growth of the The innovative capacity of young people, their enthusiasm and passion will help us to face a national and international crisis which is now also affecting drug companies", he explains. "We are pleased to host - comments Davide Improta, director of the Novartis site in Torre Annunziata - a large group of teachers from Campania schools in our factory, a cutting-edge production facility with respect to the highest international standards. This project is dedicated to the theme of 'innovation - continues Improta - is in line with the strategies of our company engaged in the development of innovation and in the protection of patients' health, and further strengthens our relationships with institutions, schools and universities, which represent a growth engine of tomorrow's scientific knowledge".
