The Roche pharmaceutical group cuts 4,800 jobs

Zurich, 17-11-2010

Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche announced today it will cut around 4,800 jobs worldwide, equivalent to 6% of its headcount, and outsource another 700 jobs as part of its new restructuring plan that aims to save 2, 4 billion Swiss francs.

Called "Operational Excellence", Roche's new strategic plan "has the objective of adapting the cost structure to an increasingly demanding market context and significantly improving efficiency and productivity", reads the group's press release.

The implementation of the plan, which will extend over 2011 and 2012, should allow savings of 2.4 billion Swiss francs (1.7 billion euros) a year.

In total, 6,300 jobs are affected by the plan, Roche points out. To the 4,800 canceled jobs, particularly in the sales and production sectors, and to the 700 outsourced jobs, must be added about 800 jobs that will be transferred to other group sites.
