Online drugs, AIFA leads the European Fakeshare project
Intelligence and cooperation against the dangers of online medicines: this is the objective of the European Fakeshare project, led by the Italian Medicines Agency. The General Director of Aifa Luca Pani explains: “The online sale of counterfeit or dangerous medicines is a phenomenon that needs to be tackled globally. AIFA, which has always been at the forefront with excellent results on this front, with the European Fakeshare project promotes an innovative model of collaboration and exchange of information at an international level”.
The Agency is in fact the institution that created and led the European cooperation and intelligence project, officially launched in July and aimed at protect the health of citizens from the dangers deriving from the illegal trade of medicines on the web. The project presented by AIFA, with a two-year duration, it has been approved by the European Commission, which will finance it with over 350,000 euros within the program “Prevention of and fight against crime”.
The regulatory agencies of Spain (AEMPS), Portugal (INFARMED) and Chile (ANAMED), the University of Rome (La Sapienza, Faculty of Psychology) and the University of Trento (e-crime research group, Faculty of Law) and the Ministry of Economic Development will participate as co-beneficiaries in the framework of activities developed by AIFA.
The project aims to coordinate and optimize the law enforcement initiatives carried out by individual European countries, ensuring the shared management of monitoring activities on e-pharmacies through Information Technology systems managed by AIFA. At the origin of the project is the need to counter the growing phenomenon of online trade in illegal and dangerous drugs; among the objectives of the initiative, in particular, the preparation of a web system shared between the administrations of different Member States, aimed at managing data relating to illegal web pharmacies, often operating from servers located outside the European Union.
