In China capital punishment for drug bribes. Former Chinese Food and Drug Administration chairman Zheng Xiaoyu was sentenced to death by a Beijing court. According to the judges, the official received gifts and kickbacks of about $850,000 from some pharmaceutical companies, and authorized the sale of inadequately tested drugs. These also include an antibiotic that killed 10 people last year before being withdrawn from the local market. Zheng, 63, headed the Chinese FDA from 1998 to 2005. In early 2007, charges of corruption led to his expulsion from the Communist Party. Last year his former secretary was also sentenced to 15 years in prison, again for corruption.
