The EUROPE of the drug, which has studied and developed 90 percent of the currently available vaccines, is losing its leadership, outclassed by the United States and Japan, while China and India are advancing. The pharmaceutical industry of the Old Continent employs six hundred thousand people, yet lacks competitiveness. The worrying situation was outlined by Brian Ager, director general of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies (EFPI), and by Thomas Cueni, secretary of the Dolder Club, which brings together the CEOs of the top 40 pharmaceutical companies. American companies invest more and are ready for changes. Italy also suffers among Europeans. Too many legislative and regulatory differences, too many unknown factors in price negotiations. One of the priorities, for the two experts, is to streamline procedures. (mp.s.)
