With +2.7%, however, the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations is among the few sectors that grew in November compared to the same month in 2010. 13 JAN – In November 2011, the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production increased by 0.3% compared to October, however, on average for the September-November quarter, there was a decrease of 3.0% compared to the previous quarter. Adjusted for calendar effects, in November the index decreased in trend terms by 4.1% (there were 21 working days, as in November 2010). On average for the first eleven months of the year, production grew by 0.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.

From which it also emerges that, compared to November 2010, the only growing industry sectors (data adjusted for calendar effects) are mining (+12.4%), the manufacture of basic pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical preparations (+2.7%) and the manufacture of machinery nec (+2.1%). Even if the comparison between the first 11 months of 2010 and the first 11 months of 2011 as regards the pharmaceutical industry still shows -0.4%.
"Fortunately however – declared the president of Farmindustria, Massimo Scaccabarozzi, commenting on the data – our production goes abroad, with a +16% in the September-October two-month period against the negative Italian picture of -2%". Indeed, the president of Farmindustria explained that, as far as the drug industry is concerned, there is a "very diversified" trend between the domestic and international markets. And in the last quarter, he specified, "exports were the driving force. This confirms the international appeal of our production, but the negative picture of the domestic market is worrying, where even the Ims data on pharmacy sales show a braking of -1.2%".
Among the sectors in decline, according to Istat, those that recorded the largest trend decreases in November are the manufacture of electrical equipment and non-electrical household appliances (-13.6%) and the manufacture of computers, electrical products
