It is a copy (me-too) of the brand name medicine. The patents have a duration of 20 years (WTO agreements). The generic is not always cheaper: the anti-Aids drug Nelfinavir (Roche) costs 500 dollars a year per patient; 1800 the generic (Indian Cipla).
