The leaders of the pharmaceutical company Menarini are sentenced. President Lucia Aleotti sentenced to 10 and a half years for money laundering from tax fraud, her brother, Giovanni Aleotti, vice president, 7 and a half years for the same crimes.
Lucia Aleotti was also convicted of corruption. Ordered the confiscation of one billion euros in the family's overseas accounts. The largest Italian pharmaceutical company, Menarini of Florence, would have become such by perpetrating for almost thirty years, from 1984 to 2010, a colossal scam against the national health system. By using fictitious foreign companies to purchase the active ingredients of the drugs, he allegedly raised the final price through a series of false invoices.
The State, by reimbursing medicines with inflated prices, would have lost 860 million euros. The Aleotti family, owner of Menarini, would have earned over half a billion euros: that money would have been laundered abroad together with other illicit proceeds accumulated thanks to corruption and numerous tax fraud crimes, for a total of around 1.2 billion euros .
The thesis of the Florence prosecutor's office was in fact accepted tonight by the Court of the Tuscan capital, judge Francesco Gratteri president of the jury, who after a two-year trial.
