Corden Pharma (manufacturer for third parties) in crisis, 192 redundancies requested

Just fired, without even the support of social safety nets. This seems to be the fate of the 192 workers (out of a total of 491 employees) of Corden Pharma, pharmaceutical company of Sermoneta (Latina). A dramatic situation, which precipitated last week, which today (Thursday 15 November) an attempt will be made to bring it back onto more acceptable tracks during the meeting held in Rome at 10 am at the Ministry of Labour. In support of the crisis table, the unions have called an eight-hour strike, with a garrison in front of the office of the dicastery.

I 192 licenziamenti (pari al 40 per cento dell’intero personale), che dovrebbero scattare in gennaio, sono stati annunciati dalla Corden il 9 novembre scorso, durante un incontro in Prefettura. Furthermore, for these redundancies, the group has not so far provided for the use of social safety nets, a measure strongly contested by the unions (Filctem Cgil, Femca Cisl, Uiltec Uil, Ugl Chimici and Confail). The situation is further aggravated by the initiation of the arrangement procedure in continuity - which would pave the way, if no solutions are found, even to the possible bankruptcy of the company - and by the cut of future salaries of 15 per cent, to which is added the partial non-payment of October paycheck.

La Corden Pharma nasce nel 2006 come marchio farmaceutico privato dell’International chemical investors group (Icig). Possiede tre stabilimenti in Italia – Bergamo, Caponago (Monza) e Sermoneta (Latina) – e altri sei tra Belgio, Francia, Svizzera, Germania e Stati Uniti. L’impianto di Sermoneta è stato acquisito dalla multinazionale nel 2010, precedentemente era di proprietà della statunitense Bristol Myers Squibb. Secondo quanto riferito dal gruppo, il sito perde annualmente circa 28 milioni di euro, e nel corso degli ultimi anni ha già subito pesanti ristrutturazioni, con la conseguente diminuzione del personale.

The president of the Province and the mayors of Latina, Pontinia, Sermoneta, Norma and Sezze, have meanwhile requested the Ministry of Economic Development (with a unitary document) for recognition of the status of "complex industrial crisis area". Per gli amministratori locali la crisi della Corden “rischia di diventare una nuova Goodyear, e questo territorio non può davvero permetterselo”. Le difficoltà dell’azienda farmaceutica porterebbe al “complessivo impoverimento del tessuto produttivo e manifatturiero del territorio”, toccando un’area già soggetta “a recessione economica e a crisi occupazionale”, oltre che al possibile “inquinamento di fenomeni malavitosi”. Da qui la richiesta del riconoscimento, che permetterebbe “la presentazione di progetti di riconversione e riqualificazione industriale”, utili a “poter uscire dallo stato di crisi, a prospettare un nuovo sviluppo e a garantire i livelli occupazionali esistenti e crearne di nuovi”.
