CENSIS, ITALIANS, 25 BILLION A YEAR FOR HEALTHCARE SERVICES

Italians 'forced' to bear the costs of health services and benefits. In our country, in fact, private health expenditure by families represents about a fifth of total health expenditure, and is equal to 25 billion euros. This was revealed by a research conducted by Censis on the future of supplementary healthcare and presented yesterday in Rome. Citizens - emerges from the research - pay about 57 percent of specialist visits, almost 21 percent of diagnostic tests and 5 percent of hospitalizations out of their own pockets. Among the specialist visits, then, the largest share paid out by Italians are dental visits (92 per cent), obstetric-gynecological visits (64.5 per cent) and dietetic visits (57.1 per cent). The reasons that lead to choosing this path, putting your hand in your wallet, are many. According to the research, "trust in the doctor and in the facility are the fundamental reason" (84.4 percent in the case of hospitalizations, 71.5 percent in the case of specialist visits and 55 percent in the case of diagnostic tests), but at the same time "the need to avoid excessively long waiting lists" (33 percent in the case of diagnostic tests and 14 percent in the case of specialist medical visits) also has an impact.
