Censis, private healthcare spending and waiting lists are growing

Private healthcare spending on households continues to grow, equal to 33.9 billion euros in 2016 (+1.9% compared to 2012). While waiting lists in the public swell. This is what emerges from the 2017 Censis Report on the country's social situation. In 2014-2017, the wait for a mammogram was extended by 60 days, by eight days for a cardiology visit, by six days for colonoscopy and magnetic resonance imaging. Another dysfunction that is clearly worsening is the territoriality of the quality of the offer.

Approximately 64% of citizens are satisfied with the health service of their region, a share that however drops to 46.6% in the South. During the last year, the health service of their region has worsened according to 30.5% of Italians, a share that rises in South at 38.1% and in the Center at 32.6%. As for disabilities, in 2016 there were 3,378,000 non-self-sufficient people (8% of the population, with shares equal to 7% in the South, 5.8% in the Centre, 5.5% in the North-East and 4.7% in the Northwest). The 80,8% is over 65 years old. In light of current trends, it is estimated that in 2031 there will be 4,666,000 dependent people and the area most at risk is the South, with an expected increase of 10.5%.

Home care data documents a network still insufficient and housing continues to be a sort of Cinderella of assistance, with 273,000 guests. And in the last year, families with non self-sufficient people experienced greater difficulties in supporting health care costs (51% compared to 31.5% for the rest of the families). Nor do solutions such as providing assistance to the non self-sufficient with robots find consensus among the Italians (the 73% of the over 75s is absolutely against it).

Now in its 51st edition, the Censis Report interprets the most significant socio-economic phenomena of the country in the economic phase we are going through. The General Considerations introduce the Report by emphasizing how a long development cycle is closing without economic expansion, according to processes with low mutual interference, in which the future has remained glued to the present. Now the imagination and the preparation of the new must leverage the combination of technology and territory In the second part, Italian society in 2017, the topics of greatest interest that emerged during the year are addressed, focusing on the centers of gravity of the recovery, but also inertial drags that must be handled with care, with the aim of recomposing a collective imaginary that releases propulsive force and does not allow rancor and nostalgia to prevail in the social body. In the third and fourth part the analyzes by sector are presented: training, work and representation, welfare and health, the territory and networks, subjects and economic processes, media and communication, security and citizenship .
