The "white coats" increase in Italy. In fact, compared to 2003, there were 25,000 more medical graduates enrolled in the Orders in 2006, with an increase of 4.5%, which even reaches +24% for dentists. Thus the total number of Italian white coats reaches 405,000, 354,000 doctors and 50,000 dentists. And Italy reaches an average of 4.1 doctors for every thousand inhabitants, against 2.9 in 2003, exceeded in Europe only by Greece. The doctor-patient ratio is therefore reduced: each doctor has 165 patients, 6 less than three years ago. And each dentist has 1,125, a good 257 fewer than in 2003. Bologna, Genoa and Rome are the record-breaking provinces, with one doctor for every 189 inhabitants.
There are exceptions: in Lodi the inhabitants per doctor are 290. For doctors, the greatest increases were recorded in Friuli (+6.6%), Sardinia (+6.5%) and Trentino Alto Adige (+6.3%). The regions that lose the greatest number of patients are therefore Friuli and Trentino (-12 for each doctor) Sardinia and Basilicata (-9). Among dentists, Sicilians lose the most patients (-492) and Ligurians (-429).
The “women's quota” is also on the rise: in December 2005 (latest data available) there were 119,068 women doctors enrolled in the Register, equal to 33.9% of the total, against 33% the previous year.
The Federation of the Orders of Doctors and Dentists "photographed" the numbers of the profession.
