The 72nd World Health Assembly, the main decision-making body of the World Health Organization, opens today (yesterday for the reader) in Geneva, which will meet at the United Nations Building, until next May 28, the delegations of the 194 member states of the organization.

Italy has promoted a proposal for a resolution of the World Health Assembly on the transparency of the contracting of medicines, vaccines and other health technologies and, in this context, co-organises with the Republic of Korea a side- official event on the same theme.

An additional side-event entitled “Nutrition4Health”, this time co-organized with Bangladesh, will address the link between nutrition, health and non-communicable diseases, emphasizing the importance of traditional, healthy and sustainable diets, such as the Mediterranean diet.

The World Health Assembly is a unique and privileged forum for discussion, at an international level, on the main issues relating to global health. The agenda includes highly topical issues: in addition to issues relating to the WHO budget and the reform of its governance, linked to the 13th General Work Program promoted by Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the national delegations will be called to discuss, among the other topics, access to medicines, emergency health programs (such as the one aimed at dealing with the Ebola epidemic), non-communicable diseases and preparations for the high-level event of the United Nations General Assembly on coverage universal healthcare.
