Pharmaceutical pole the good industry that overcomes the crisis
In the Sixties it developed in Latina and then in the other provinces. Today Lazio is the first region for exports with 7 billion in sales. The sector employs over 35,000 people between employees and related industries
There is a sector in Lazio that knows no crisis and indeed in recent years has become an international point of reference: the pharmaceutical sector. Established in the 1960s in Latina, the Lazio industrial hub now expands from Rome to Rieti and from Latina to Frosinone, with more than 50 companies employing 15,000 people, as well as related industries of almost 20,000 workers. And it continues to grow: in the last three years, Lazio has become the first region in Italy for exports with more than 7 billion in sales abroad and is the second in importance and number of workers; in Europe, it is fourth behind Darmstadt in Germany. Investments by companies have reached the figure of 600 million a year, of which 280 in research and the rest in production. In all, Lazio attracts 20% of the total in Italy, or 120 million, and this is also the driving force for related industries, where investments are worth more than 50 million each year. Today the Lazio pharmaceutical hub, together with related industries, produces a turnover of 2.7 billion and the margins for growth are wide. The industrial plans speak of another 600 million to be invested in the next 3 years. «Companies want to grow – says Massimo Scaccabarozzi, president of Farmindustria – and Lazio will certainly benefit from this. Provided that there are no cuts in pharmaceutical spending, which would cause the loss of investments and jobs". Investing means hiring and in Lazio 1,600 young people have been hired in the last two years. Not only. Janssen of Latina is planning resources for 100 million for the next two years and other companies are ready to invest in research, which in Lazio can count on 1075 workers and is financed to the tune of 90% by private companies. The focus is on biotechnologies and innovative therapies.
