The Piedmont Region achieved savings of more than €10 million a year on the cancer drug Imatinib thanks to a reduction in the original price of 90%. Cost reduction is which took place through the tender announced by Scr Piemonte and awarded in recent days.
Until 2016, the medicine was covered by a patent, since January the corresponding equivalent products have entered the market.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of this tender, which allows us to continue to guarantee the health of citizens but achieving considerable savings and therefore freeing up useful resources to strengthen our health care – underlines the regional health councilor Antonio Saitta -. This is an example of how pharmaceutical tenders represent a great opportunity for the healthcare system".
