The 2012 balance sheet of the national pharmaceutical market is one of recession: the negative change in turnover (-0.83%) and the slight slowdown in exports are compounded by the negative performance for the pharmacy channel which recorded a decrease in turnover of 5, 3%. These are the Farmindustria data released this morning at the 'Innovate to grow' conference, currently being held in Tirrenia (Pisa) and promoted by Asis, the association for studies on the health industry.
"The crisis seems to have taken over – said Marco Macchia, president of Asis and of the degree course in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technologies at the University of Pisa – but all the interlocutors who agreed to participate in these study days are instead convinced that the Italian system, and with it the pharmaceutical sector, can restart. The problem is being able to interpret without prejudice the requests and the need for change in the health sector which is already undergoing drastic transformations and which will force all the protagonists to adapt".
Pharmaceutical companies suffer above all and for this reason Massimo Scaccabarozzi, president of Farmindustria, underlined the need to focus on innovation: "Proper quality of the pharmaceutical sector which has 6,000 research workers, 1.2 billion investments in this field and the 81% of companies with innovative activities. The pharmaceutical industry is an excellence of Italian manufacturing and can count on an export of 65%. It is second, in terms of production, only to Germany".
World competition, increasingly tight and open to emerging countries, also in the pharmaceutical sector can be won by focusing on innovation. This is the recipe of Asis, an association for studies on the health industry, presented during the conference 'Innovate to grow'.
