Public drug research is growing. In 2006, the total number of studies approved in Italy exceeded for the first time 700 units. This is a significant increase compared to 2005 of the 11%. This was reported in the VI National Report of the Italian Medicines Agency (Aifa) referring to 2006. The most frequent subjects of study were antineoplastic and immunomodulatory drugs, followed by drugs for the nervous system and general antimicrobials for systemic use.
