This is the appeal launched by the Minister of Health, Livia Turco, on the occasion of the 59th National Congress of Fimmg (Italian Federation of general practitioners) underway in Villasimius, in the province of Cagliari. The objective of the pact, explains the minister expected today at the congress, in a note, is "the definitive affirmation of local medicine". And for the foundations of the new alliance to be solid, "a cultural change and a change of trust in the possibility of reopening the great 'construction site' of Italian healthcare is needed". Fimmg Turco asks the 'white coats' "to carry out concrete actions", which allow family doctors to become "the second pillar of health care. A second pillar - he underlines - of equal dignity and excellence of the hospital and which, together with the hospital, gives life to a true integration of social and health services that surrounds and fully satisfies the citizen". In the minister's dreams there is a "Health home" to which we must entrust most of the assistance responses that come to us from the new needs of citizens, and which cannot continue to be directly or indirectly entrusted to the hospital". The hospital "must think of acute cases and specialist assistance with modern, adequate structures of the right size, also rediscovering that human measure that today risks being lost". General practitioners, on the other hand, must satisfy other needs: "The need for continuity of care, home care, visits and checks in smaller structures coordinated by family medicine".
