In Italy, the consumption of antibiotic drugs is one of the highest in Europe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), resistance to antibiotics by microorganisms represents an increasingly serious problem for public health and "is capable of jeopardizing the successes achieved in recent decades with modern medicine". The phenomenon of antibiotic resistance is universal in nature, but in Italy the picture is decidedly more worrying.
